HAITI-day 5

Got out of bed by 645 and had breakfast;bun with margarine,hard-boiled egg and hot chocolate made with real Haitian cocoa beans.Very good, spiced with something,?anise.Group photo afterwards because several people leaving this pm,including photographer from Florida.Hopefully he will post photos online.

Clinic was not as busy today.Less Haitians  and more chronic illness, rather than acute problems. Some of our interpreters are young Haitian guys. They are pretty good, but I'm sure things get lost in translation. Many times I heard about "poop" in the eyes, instead of "pus".

Lunch was egg/hotdog omlette, fried plantain and boiled plantain.I liked the fried plantain.Shortly after, the departing members of our crew loaded their gear into the wire-enclosed flatbed truck.Everybody got fresh dust masks for the arduous journey back to Portauprince. It was sad to see them go.

Later this afternoon we had special guests,US Navy and Marines. They are based nearby and brought much-needed medical supplies.About 20 soldiers unloaded large plastic crates off a huge military vehicle. We chatted with them and served chilled(not really)Coke and 7-Up from our fridge. Not only do we have protection from above, but we also have marines down the street .

Rice and beans, boiled cabbagge/carrots/tomato and beef stew for supper. There was also some type of potato-yucca,which was ok.Bible verse, prayer and psalms after supper(Moses using a stick to remedy bitter water-we are like the sticks)Presentation of a symbolic painting done by local Haitian in appreciation of our efforts.

Almost bedtime, have shifted to new mattress on floor.Hope I am not attacked by the local fire ants.Let the snoring begin!
